Ingredients
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
1 1/2-2 lbs ground beef
-
2 tablespoons oil
-
1 medium onion, chopped
-
1 green pepper, chopped
-
1 (19 ounce) can tomatoes
-
1 (10 ounce) can tomato soup (or tomato sauce, I always add a can of tomato soup as we like the extra tomato flavor and creaminess)
-
2 tablespoons flour
-
1/4-1/2 teaspoon pepper
-
1/4 teaspoon sugar
-
1 -1 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese or 1 -1 1/2 cup cheese, of choice
-
cooking spray
-
-
1 (12 ounce) package noodles (your choice, I usually use elbow macaroni or broad egg noodles, youngsters love the bow knots)
-
2 tablespoons melted butter or 2 tablespoons margarine
-
Instructions
- PREPARE CRUMB TOPPING.
- In a skillet over medium heat melt the butter or margarine and lightly brown the crumbs.
- PREPARE NOODLES.
- Cook noodles according to package directions and drain.
- Coat the noodles with melted butter.
- PREPARE GROUND BEEF.
- In a large skillet cook the beef, onions, and green pepper over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink then drain off excess oil.
- Add tomatoes and blend in flour (for those wishing more tomato flavor you may add a ten ounce can of condensed tomato soup).
- Add seasonings and simmer five minutes. For us the ingredients are right on, but as noted when originally posting the recipe -- you can add extra seasonings of your choice if you wish, if you are wanting a spicier version.
- ASSEMBLY.
- Spray your favorite 2 quart casserole or a baking dish with cooking spray.
- Start your layers with noodles alternating with the hamburger.
- Add the shredded cheese and top with the bread crumbs.
- Bake uncovered in a 325 degree oven for 25 or 30 minutes (Time varies from oven to oven).
