Instructions

  1. Sift flour, salt, baking powder and sugar.
  2. Cut in shortening with a pastry cutter or two knives.
  3. Stir in egg and milk.
  4. Spread half of batter into a greased 9-inch round baking pan.
  5. Spread softened butter over mixture, then pat remaining batter over butter.
  6. Bake at 450ºF for 20 minutes.
