Instructions

  1. Cream shortening; gradually add sugar, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer.
  2. Add egg, and beat.
  3. Add vanilla and orange rind; mix well.
  4. Combine flour, baking powder, soda, and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk, and mix well.
  5. Roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface.
  6. Cut with a 3-inch cookie cutter, and place on lightly greased cookie sheets.
  7. Sprinkle with sugar crystals.
  8. Bake at 375* for 7 to 8 minutes or until lightly browned.
  9. Cool on wire racks.
  10. Yield: abut 5 dozen.
